BMI Calculator

Body mass index estimates whether your weight sits in a healthy range for your height. It is a screening number, not a body composition reading — it cannot tell muscle from fat, and it says nothing about what your metabolism is doing today.

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not account for muscle mass, body composition, or where fat is distributed. Discuss your result with a clinician rather than acting on it alone.

Overview

Body mass index is the oldest screening number in weight medicine and the bluntest. It was designed in the nineteenth century to describe populations, not individuals, and it has been doing a job it was never built for ever since.

How it is calculated

In imperial units, BMI is your weight in pounds multiplied by 703, divided by your height in inches squared. In metric it is simply kilograms divided by metres squared. Nothing else goes into it — not your age, not your sex, not how much of you is muscle.

What the categories mean

These cut-offs are the same for men and women and do not shift with age, which is one of several reasons a single BMI reading tells you less than it appears to.

Where it breaks down

BMI cannot tell muscle from fat. A lean, heavily trained person and a sedentary one of the same height and weight get the same number. It says nothing about where fat sits, and visceral fat around the organs carries far more metabolic risk than the same mass on the hips. It also drifts with build: at the same BMI, people of South Asian descent tend to carry more visceral fat, which is why some clinical guidelines use lower thresholds for that population.

Most importantly, BMI is a photograph of your dimensions. It does not move day to day, so it cannot tell you whether what you did this week worked.

What to do with the number

Treat it as a starting coordinate, not a verdict. If it sits outside the healthy range it is worth a conversation with a clinician, who will look at waist measurement, blood pressure, lipids and blood glucose alongside it. If you are actively losing weight, the more useful question is not what your BMI is but what you are losing — fat or lean tissue — and BMI cannot answer that.

A formula is not a measurement

Every calculator on this page works the same way: it takes your height, your weight, your age and a guess about how much you move, and returns the average answer for people who look like that on paper. It is a reasonable place to start. It is not a reading of you, and it cannot change when you do.

Rysflo measures instead. One sixty-second exhale each morning reads three molecules in your breath, and the day’s protein, carbohydrate, fat and fibre come out in grams — against the goal you set, from what your metabolism is actually doing rather than from a formula on your dimensions.
